I would like to contact anyone by the last name of Kremer. This was my mother's maiden name. My grandfather, her father, was born in Camp Springs, Kentucky. His name is Anthony Michael Kremer, and he lived in Dayton, Ohio, as an adult, where my mother and I are from. He passed away in San Diego, California in l970. My mother is now deceased also. I would like to hear from any relative of ours, or anyone who recalls either my grandfather or my mother, who visited Camp Springs as a child - her name is Doris Dean Kremer, also known as "Dody" Kremer. Thank you for your time in assisting me. I can be reached at this E-mail or by phone: Area code 207- 223- 5277' or Address: 31 Ferry St., Winterport, ME. 04496.

I just found your web-site, and I will be visiting it often. Camp Springs holds a lot of memories for me also. My father, George Stortz, was a Campbell County Police Officer for several years, and actually was a partner to George Arnold, who eventually became Chief of Police. Mom and Dad lived on Fender Road at the time and rented a house from Ruth and Bob Kohls. I went to school "up on the hill" until the 4th grade, then moved to Crestview and then attended St. Joe's in Cold Spring. I loved living out there. When I married Greg Fuller, we built a home next to the home we rented. Greg's grandfather, Andy Fuller, was the first bus driver (and only schoolbus) in Campbell County. I love to listen to the stories about that time. If anyone has any stories about Andy Fuller and those days of riding his bus, I would love to hear them. I know Greg's father, Bill Fuller, would love to hear them. We came across a map of the area of long ago and learned that the creek behind our home was called Fuller Creek.
If you have any memories of my father, I would love to hear them also.

I am currently looking for a couple more cemeteries in the Camp Springs area. One is on 10 mile road. I have really good information that it was there. Will have to visit to verify if anything is left. I just heard about the other on this weekend. It is or was on the hill to the east of the old Schuchter farm at the corner of Nine Mile and Four Mile Pike. I think the property now belongs to Fred Mashinot Jr. per the PVA web site. The story is that there were graves on that hill marked only with field stones. We are interested in them even if we can't readily identify who might be buried there. We found about 50 such graves near the corner of Tug Fork and Four Mile. Just to the east of St. John's Church. It contains five rows of field stones all in a nice row. Right now, we are calling it the Tucker Cemetery. That could change as we learn more. There is another in that area that has been referred to as the Greene Cemetery and it was on the Uthe farm. We haven't be able to locate that one. If you hear of any of these old cemeteries I would appreciate a heads up so Marvin Record and I can investigate. Oh, there is also one somewhere on the Neltner farm. Several people remember seeing the stones but we haven't located that one either.

Visited the Camp Springs web site and noticed the story about the Regular Baptist Church. It was mentioned that you had not located this cemetery. For several reasons, I believe this cemetery is the 12 Mile Baptist Church Island Cemetery in 12 Mile Creek. Once called Well's Creek, the cemetery at that location was served by Jesse Beagle. There was once a headstone in this cemetery for the wife of Jesse Beagle. Also, I have found a broken headstone in this location that says "member of the Regular Baptist Church". I will attach a photo. It is not very clear, I should return with my brush and baking flour to make the inscription stand out. I do not believe this is too much of a stretch to have called this the 4 mile Baptist Church. I believe the area was referred to as 4 mile even if it was on another creek. I have also found very early records which call 4 mile creek Salima creek. This is in one of the old deed books in the County Clerks Office in Alexandria. More information supporting my claim can be found here:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kycampbe/fourmilechurchrecords.htm

A partial list of those buried in the Island Church Cemetery can be found here:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kycampbe/islandcreekcemetery.htm

I hope this helps and I would be interested in your opinion on the subject.

Hey Folks,
My name is John Groeschen Jr. My father was John Richard Groeschen. He was the son of George J. Groeschen and Florence Reitmann. My father and me loved to read Don's history of this part of Campbell County. My dad would tell all kinds of storys of the Steffens and Enzweilers from his youth. Many of them were his cousins. My dad recently passed away after a brief illness and as he requested I will be bringing him home soon. He often spoke of days he spent running the back roads and was particurly fond of the area around Tugfork Rd.were his father owned some property. He was born in 1934 at 46 East Alexandria Pike in Cold Spring in a large stone house that his father built. He had 14 brothers and sisters many of whom still live in the area. Thanks for the great memories Don.

Does anyone on your website Campsprings.com have any information regarding my gg-grandfather Joshua Johnson who was born between 1804 and 1808 either in VA, TN or KY and died on 28 or 29 July, 1871 in New Richmond, Clermont County, Ohio. He was a member of the http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kycampbe/islandcreekcemetery.htm both the 4-Mile- and 12-Mile Baptists Churches in Campbell County, KY between 1835 and 1860--when he and his family moved to New Richmond, Clermont Co., Ohio. Joshua was a church leader and often preached at the 12-Mile Baptist Church, My Joshua was married four times. The location of his burial site is as yet unknown; and was not found alongside that of his fourth wife Sarah Kennelly (Plotner) Johnson [they were married in Clermont Co., Ohio on 23 August 1863] who is buried at the Watkins-Hills Cemetery.Ohio Township, Clermont County near New Richmond, Ohio. Joshua's first wife, Harriet (Grover) Johnson (they were married in Mason Co., KY in 1828) is buried at the Carmack Family Cemetery at the 12-Mile Baptist Church in Campbell, County, KY.

If your Campsprings community knows anything about this Joshua Johnson I would be happy to share the considerable information I have about his family and descendants. I have especially been having a problem finding out more about his place and date of birth, his place of burial, and any info on his parents and grandparents.

Greetings to the Camp Springs Web Site Readers. I am humbled by the response to my writings about the Steffen Families. After a long pause in new Chapters, I hope to continue writing about other families. The response to my chapters has been overwhelming and I have provided research information to so many relatives. I hope to continue next with the Enzweiler Families. I have so much research information about the Enzweilers in Germany but I sometimes have lost some of the Enzweiler families her in the U.S. If anyone would like to share information about your Enzweiler family, I would be most interested. Thank you. You can reach me at donbaumann@fuse.net I look forward to hear from descendants of Enzweiler Families.

Hi everyone,

I've been corresponding with Don Baumann about the STEFFEN family. With his help, and that of many other STEFFEN researchers, I have put together quite a large file on the STEFFEN family. I greatly enjoy the Camp Springs website. It is truly a unique place and I hope it is preserved as a little bit of paradise in Northern Kentucky, especially in the face of all the development that is taking place there.
Keep up the good work on the website.

Interesting to read your website, "The Steffen Family - Chapter 1" by Donald A. Baumann. If my father had not legally changed his surname from Baumann to Roberts in 1943, my name would be Drew Baumann. I was born in 1944 and have searched for my Paternal Baumann ancestors since I was ten years old. My grandfather, Charles F. Baumann, was born in Sidney, OH. He was the youngest child of Christian P. Baumann and Anna Elisabeth Geminn. Christian Baumann was born in Kusel, Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany in 1833 and immigrated to America in 1853 and became a naturalized citizen in 1858. He had six siblings in Kusel. His father was from a family of 12 Baumann in Kusel. Christian's grandfather, Andreas, was born in Herborn, Dillkries, Hessen in 1705 and probably followed the leaders their to Kusel about 1738 to restore and repopulate the Palatinate. Andreas Baumann was appointed "Stadtschultheissen zu Kusel" (Mayor-Judge) in 1748, probably by the Duke of Zweibrucken-Pfalz, until his death at age 85 in 1790. The Herzog (Duke) of Zweibrucken had fostered and encouraged Evangelist Reformed and Lutheran churches since the Reformation. From Andreas Baumann's children and succeeding generations, there was always one son who became Ev. Ref. German Parish Pastors who married daughters of Ev. Ref. Pastors. Andreas was educated and graduated from the "Hochen Schule Herborn", where his father, Johann Siegfried Christian Baumann, was a Book Binder and Caretaker. Andreas Baumann's grandfather, Siegfried Baumann, was from Westerburg, Dillkries about 1633 and married Elisabetha Neid in Herborn in 1666, who was the daughter of Johannes Neid of Trarbach, Mosel, Germany. I enjoyed reading your web page.

Cheers, Drew Baumann Roberts.

Hello cousins!

I was absolutely thrilled to discover this website. I am a descendent of Isidore Baumann and love having Don’s story to share with my family. I currently live in Tennessee, but the rest of my family is still in the area. My Grandmother was Anna Catherine (Baumann) Gerner daughter of Joseph Christian Baumann. I had no idea how many of us are out there! Thanks Don for opening up a whole new (old) world to us.

I wanted to thank Don again for the info that he's collected. It's allowed me to build an amature website for my family members. To anyone who is interested it's at http://www.geocities.com/steffenfamilytree/index.html It shows Steffen offspring that moved from Kentucky to California. It's by no means complete or definetive but it serves its purpose. It includes acknowledgements to Campsprings.com and to Don personally. After speaking with Don about companies like Ancestry.com and such, I took their acknowledgement off the site because what he said made alot of sense. Thanks again Don!

My parents (Jerome and Irma Futscher) married, they lived upstairs in the George and Ida Schultz home, currently the farm that Lonnie Enzweiler now owns. I lived there until age 3 when we moved to the house that my mom still lives in. I am looking for pictures of the old farmhouse, but especially pictures of George and Ida Schultz. Any help is appreciated. I currently live in Glendale, KY with husband Tom Steller. We have two children, Katie and Kevin and a beautiful granddaughter, Natalie. Come see us!! Janet Futscher-Steller.

I picked up a copy of The Camp Springs Press last night at the fish fry. What a wonderful publication! I didn’t grow up in Camp Springs but spent most of my time with friends there. That’s why my family and I always support the school’s fish fry as well as functions at the fire department. I especially enjoyed reading about the initiative to bring wine tasting and the resurgence of vineyards to the area. I often wondered why the people of Camp Springs were always the best home made wine makers in Kentucky. Now I know.

Keep up the great work! Thanks for the history lesson… and for the Culinary Artist Extraordinaire “Mom” See’s recipe.

I would like to thank you for posting the articles written by Don Baumann on your web site. I am pretty sure that I am a descendant of Joseph Neltner and the information Don provided was great. My grand father, whom I did not get the opportunity to meet, came to Peoria, Illinois from Ohio/ Kentucky sometime in the early 1900's. He worked in the local coal mine until his death, mine accident. Currently that was all the information I had on the Neltner Family. So, Don's articles as I stated were great.
Thank You,

This Chrismas, my aunt found my great-Grandfathers real first name and thanks to Don's research, I was able to tie our families together. Searching last year I was only able to get as far as my grandfather and then hit a rock...I just figured with my luck my family came from a bunch of cut throats and had to change their name, (hehehe)...but now i know better. Joe, it is great to hear that Camp Springs is developing a renewed interest in vineyards. "Renewing the Rhine ----" Perhaps after 140 years or so, Camp Springs will again become the vineyards of Kentucky's Fine Wines. There are so many historic stone homes and barns that could be of interest to visitors to the German village of Four Mile. It is a natural for a look back at 1850. In Germany it would be a destination place to visit and dine with fine wine. Camp Springs has a history that must be preserved.

Read the question by Lonnie Enzweiler and noted that you gave him the correct answer but on our side of the family (Blenke)...we always referred to the Four Mile Cemetery by St. Joseph's because that was where our relatives were buried...I know my father always mentioned the Enzweilers but it was in relation to the Catholic Church...don't know if this helps or not...Helen Blenke Brunstrom

My gggrandmother, Maria Jergens, b. 1819 in Germany, d. 1899 in Dayton, OH, may well have been the daughter of Peter Steffen & Anna Bone. It also appears that Maria's husband, Phillip Jergens, had a sister, likely the same Mary Jeurgens who wed Matthias Steffen, son of Peter Steffen and Maria Bodem. Phillip Jergens' parents, Philipp & Monica Jergens, are buried in the same lot in Calvary Cemetery (Dayton, OH) with Matthias and his mother (Sec. 15, Lot 16).

My husband and I bought the Historic Four Mile Inn about 5 years ago. The community has made us feel welcomed. What a surprise it was our first Memorial Day to find people lining up in front of and along side our house. We had no idea what was going on until we heard the sirens! Since then we have enjoyed meeting our neighbors every year to watch the parade.
We are looking for stories and photos about things that have happened at our place and would eventually like to make a scrap book with these. If you have some to share e-mail or snail mail me. We would love to share these memories and stories, as well as just having a record of the history of our place.
I appreciate this web site and enjoy visiting when i get the chance. Keep up the good work.

I am the 2nd son of Georgia Berger = descendant -n-daughter of George Groeschen + Florence reitman. Georgia recently wrote a memo describing childhood memories from h growing up in large Catholic Family @ 46 East Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring Ky. My adult life has made me wonder where my drive comes from. Sometimes the driving/making mode is quite intense. Over the past 10years I have been fortifying the creek bank behind my house with stone i hand pick from the creek. The wall is growing and nothing feels better than to watch that wall take shape. I also helped weld/fabricate a large statue (32ft.)of the Virgin Mary in Stainles Steel - located now in Santa Clara Calif. Stone and the Virgin Mary are symbols to me. reading over the wonderful material on this website has helped me understand my German heritage - I hope to submit a photo of the statue - "Our Lady of Peace'. I'm also hoping to pile on more stones this summer. thanks so much Don - Dick Berger

Hi all:

My daughter who now lives in Belvidere, Illinois called me early this morning to tell me to click into this web site. Wow! - What a surprise!

She was looking up information on her Groeschen relatives for a paper her youngest son had to do for an assignment and happened on to it.

Well, first off my name is Georgia "Groeschen Berger. I now live in Belcamp, Maryland - but was originally from Cold Springs, Ky. - your neighboring town.

I have many fond memories of Camp Springs, Ky.

My parents -George J. Groeschen and Florence M. Reitman were married in the little red brick St. Joseph Church on the hill in 1926. I was the oldest of their eleven children. Sons - Jude, Jerry, Jim, Joe, John, Jacque, Jesse and Julius -- daughters - Florence , Ann and myself. There were also four older siiblings who were half brothers, Tony and three half sisters - Helen, Rosmary (Rosie) and Mary Catherine (Kitty)

My mother was the daughter of Nick Reitman who had a very large farm (82 acres I believe) which was located at the end of Tugfork Road which is now called "Reitman Road" There are a number of new subdivisions there now!

I visited there with my son about five years ago - was surely surprised at the development. By the way , Everett Berger is one of my sons who wrote to your web page in September 2003.

Are there any pictures of the Nick Reitman family or farm around?

The Nick Reitmans had seven children, - Edward, Wendel , John, Joe,Helen,Florence and Stanley. Some of the old timers there may remember them. My grandparents and some of the uncles and aunts are buried in the St Joseph Cemetery near the church.

Stanley eventually became owner of the farm and when he died it was left to his adopted son Raymond who had several sons, whose names I do not know.

I know we were related to the John Reitman family in some way but I don't remember how. I attended Academy Notre Dame of Providence with his daughter Helen Mae, who I later learned was a distant cousin. Also some of the other names I remember attending there at that time were Leick, Neltner and Sandfoss, to name a few.

I remember driving along the road sites, especially by the "Four mile Tavern many times as my sister Flo lived near the Reitman's smokehouse when she was first married I think she had an upstairs apartment in the frame house behind the smokehouse on the picture. I visited Camp Springs with my husband and children many, many times. I remember we took a road in Ft. Thomas near the Fort, driving through Silver Grove, Ky. to get there.

They live there on Four Mile Road yet. Gail is one of their daughters. Her name is on the guest book page.

They have a large family who attended the St Joseph School there and the church was the parish church where they attended , - had the children baptized there, etc. and I know at least all of the girls were married there in that church. Their sons were great baseball players on the little league teams etc there. I know baseball was the family's "thing".

I have many fond memories of that "Nick Reitman" farm. I remember that my Grandfather Nick looked somewhat like the Grandfather in the movie "Heidi": = Remember visiting my Uncle Joe who lived there. He gave us milk in our little tin cups to drink right from the cow. Sometimes I remember it tasted like onions. LOL.

I always loved the stone house on the farm and the big barn as well. We kids (cousins) had fun playing in that barn and sliding down the hay etc. It may well have been where I developed hay fever! LOL!

That house was similar to the stone house, called "Walter House", which I believe once was owned by John Reitman who had a daughter Helen Mae. These houses always reminded me of pictures of the famous "My old Kentucky Home". I love the architecture. I always say "I would love to live in a house like that before I die".

I have vivid memories of the scene in the pic of Camp Springs skyline. I remember My grandfather's funeral cortege winding around those hills on Tugfork road on the way to the church. I was about 9 years old at that time (Now 77) and it must have made quite an impression on me for I dream about this many times. In my dreams it is the same scenario as I recall driving down the country road (Tugfork) to the church at the foot of the hill. I see the hearse circling around the hills and the sight of the church at the foot of the hill. IT IS THE SAME SCENE AS IN THE PIC!

Whenever I have this dream I usually hear some news about my family in Northern Kentucky, - sometimes good and sometimes otherwise.

It's kind of like the "TIES THAT BIND"

Hi. I'm the 3rd daughter of George Fassler and the younger sister of Mary Ann Izatt. My sis turned me on to your website. Although it's been over 50 years since I visited your town, I remember how beautiful it was. I also remember my dad fondly talking about his visits there from Newport to his many relatives. Thanks for bringing back memories of my dad and his colorful stories. Perhaps on my next visit to my sister, we'll make a trip to renew acquaintances.

Blenke, Enzweiler, Fassler, Baumann, Steffen, Kramer, etc. etc. all became related through marriage. I hope to share my research in future months. Don

Wow, what great fun to find this site! The names and pictures here bring back a lot of memories...the Saddle Club and my grandfather, Charlie Kottmeyer...the Steffens and Rowlands...my mom - who many of you may remember as "Pi" - and the Campbell County Animal Shelter that she loved so well...Oh, the pines too!...and Darlington pond...and nearly frozen Red Pops at the ballfield on summer nights... I think I'm going to have to be myself back "over the river" for a St. Joe's fish fry!

This site has really opened my eyes to the experience of our German ancestors. My grandmother married William Kilmer and they lived in Newport, KY. Her father Thornton Applegate and her mother Ann Eliza Enzweiler took out a marriage bond 12/23/1887, witnessed by Thornton Applegate and John Enzweiler. I would appreciate any info that would help me develope this Enzweiler line. Thanks!

As I ponder the lives of my ancestors I am so aware that one day, God willing, wondering souls may be in search of the meaning of my life as well. With the help of God's hand, they will find something worthwhile. We do love those who have gone before us, as we love those who have sacrificed time and talent during our lives - Uncle Don included. As the circle of life carries on, our job is to continue to love as well as sacrifice for those coming behind us. God Bless Us!

Hello to everyone from New Jersey. I loved seeing the pictures especially the Reitman Smokehouse. Would like to see more of the older buildings--could anyone capture a picture of the "Reitman Tavern" operated in the late 1800's by Nicholas and Magdalena Reitman? Their great-great grandson would love to see a picture!...

Many of you know of the oldest person burried at St. Joseph Cemetery - Peter Steffen. Of all three cemetery records I have, none of them records the grave of his wife, Anna Bone who came to Camp Springs with their children along with children of the family of Peter's first wife. Hundreds of descendants from this family still live in Campbell County. Last month while in search of Peter's grave (which we could not find) we found the head stone of Anna's grave burried under 5 inches of sod. We happened to find what records failed to list. For those of you who have been searching for her you might visit the cemetery and record this bit of history found. Head stone dates do not match those of record from Germany. If you would like more info contact me. Thanks for your web contact. Don

Gerhard whose EM is posted below is a person filled with family History. He speaks only German but vowes to learn English before he visits our area next year.
So many of the Four Mile families were from the Bachem, Losheim, Brotdorf, Merzig areas. If there are Enzweilers in your family, we are related. The Enzweiler name originated in Germany in 1706. Thanks again for the contacts made thru your web site. Don

I just learned that my great-great grandfather, Isadore Baumann, was the original owner of the Baumann house that is currently owned and being renovated by Keith Neltner. My family was in N. KY over the holidays and stopped by the house to take some pictures. Keith is doing a wonderful job and should be very proud of his accomplishments in bringing the house back to its "glory days". Keith told me about the website and I've enjoyed accessing it this morning. I've been living out of state since 1971, and it's amazing to me how many of the people who have accessed this site have names that are familiar to me. Even though I grew up in Dayton, KY, so many of the Camp Springs natives either went to school with me or my siblings (or married a Baumann), that I feel as if I still know many of them. What a great trip to the past I've had!

My grandparents used to own and run the bar there at the bottom of the hill from St. Joe's Church. Their names were Chris and Kate Hoffman Siebert. I hadn't been to the area in years and had forgotten how nice the area was. Also, didn't realize there were so many wonderful stone houses. It is nice to not only see these historical sights as you drive through, it is nice to know a little
bit of history behind them. I would like to see more history behind the stone houses and
other landmarks in the area. Camp Springs is a city like no other in our area and I'm glad
someone has taken the time to spread some knowledge about it.

Very impressed with the web page. Great photos of the old buildings in the area. Thank you for
putting the 50th anniversary of the Camp Springs Fire Department on the page. May have to have
a chat with the weather center owners though. Where's the Doppler Radar??????

Greetings from Minnesota; or should I say Minnesooota. Just hanging out with Ole and Lena,
enjoying the crisp fall weather. Hopefully we have several weeks before the snow starts flying. Ole
is hoping for an early freeze so he can try out his new ice fishing house. I don't plan to join him.
Hope everyone is doing well. Looking forward to the day when I see this website on Yahoo's top
100 list. Later y'all!

My brother Steve Fay told me to sign the guest book so I did!
I love your photos, especially the one of the Camp Springs sky line.
I have lived in Colorado for more than eight years but I still
consider Northern Kentucky home. In fact, when people ask where I am from,
I always say, "Northern Kentucky," then I have to explain it's near Cincinnati.
They say, "Why didn't you say you're from Cincinnati?", and I have to say,
"Because I'm NOT!" It's hard for Coloradans to understand;) Congrats on a
fun website. How come no pictures of Steve, Ann, Jessica or Michael Fay????
Just wondering, Maureen
